Family Fights For Girl, 3, In Need Of Kidney Transplant, Donor

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

A young girl in Delaware battling a rare kidney disease desperately needs a transplant and a donor.

Jordyn Maddox is in end-stage kidney failure. Her mom is trying to spread the word to help her little girl.

This beautiful, bubbling 3-year-old girl has been inspiration to her mother.

"She teaches me strength is not about how big you are or how strong you are. You know, strength is all within," said the mother, Taylor Burden.

Even before Jordyn was born she needed every ounce of her strength. Her mom says doctors diagnosed the Georgetown, Del., toddler in utero with a potentially-deadly disease that causes low-functioning, cyst-filled kidneys. She wasn't expected to live long after she was born.

"We were passing her around saying goodbye to her because we were just told like she's not going to make it. There's nothing we can do," Burden said.

Pictures show Jordyn after surgery Friday morning. For the past 17 days, her mom says Jordyn has been at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia undergoing hemodialysis dialysis, a final effort to filter the little girl's blood.

Her mom says she's in desperate need of a kidney transplant.

"A living donor is – it lasts longer in her body. It's better for her. It's more accepted by her body," Burden said.

In a videotape, the mother says to her daughter, "I got this."

"Got this," little Jordyn says back.

Burden coaches her daughter daily to continue her fight as she waits for a donor. Family and friends have taken to Facebook and Twitter using the hashtag #TeamJordyn to bring awareness to the 3-year-old girl's plight, hoping someone will give of themselves and give this ailing little girl the gift of life.

"I understand that my child is not the only one that needs a kidney, and I understand that she's not the sickest person that needs a kidney, and I just want to raise awareness, inspire people to take action," Burden said.

Her daughter is on the transplant list. She's just hoping that time doesn't run out. If you'd like to support Jordyn or help her, click here: http://www.facebook.com/groups/teamjordyn  to go to her Facebook page.
