8-Inch Deluge Sets New Rainfall Records For Philly

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Sunday's wet weather in Philadelphia led to a record-setting one-day rainfall.

In all, 8.02 inches fell at the Philadelphia International Airport.

That broke the previous record of 6.63 inches back in 1999 from Tropical Storm Floyd.

The heavy rain across the area caused flash flooding that closed roads and led to power outages. Many drivers were stranded.

The record-setting rain that fell in Philadelphia was the most in one calendar day since officials started keeping track back in 1872.

It also brought the total for July to 13 inches even, breaking the record for the month. Philly's previous record rainfall for the month of July was 10.42 inches set in 1994.

In areas just across the river in New Jersey, there were also copious amounts of rain Sunday. Gloucester City, for example, picked up more than 7 inches.

But, amazingly, Northeast Philly recorded just over half an inch of rain on Sunday, while Atlantic City didn't report any rainfall.
