Black boxes to be in all cars by 2014

Posted: Updated:

Many of us don't even know it, but somewhere in your car, there is likely some sort of data recorder, better known as a "black box."

Many cars already have them -- especially newer vehicles.

And if the National Transportation Safety Board has its way, every car and truck sold will be equipped with one by next year.

The boxes help investigators determine the cause of collisions.  Some say it's an invasion of privacy -- the government is being too intrusive, but one attorney we talked to says in this case, you have no privacy rights.

"There is no reasonable expectation of privacy over your vehicle when it's in a public area.. maybe your purse yeah.. but not your vehicle.. that is on a publicly funded road," said James Arrowood of the Fruitkin Law Firm.

So what kind of information are we talking about?

Video: FOX 10's Andrea Robinson has the details.
