GARLAND, Texas -

A man caught stealing from Wal-Mart was shot and killed over the weekend during a confrontation with a Garland police officer.

Police said the incident happened at the store on Marketplace Drive at about 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

A uniformed officer who was working a security job while off duty tried to stop 31-year-old Casey Daniel Smith as he was leaving the store.

The officer reportedly used his Taser on Smith, but it didn't stop him. He grabbed his gun once Smith began threatening him with a stolen crowbar, police said.

The suspect was shot once in the chest. He died at a local hospital.

Police said Smith had a robbery warrant out for his arrest. He allegedly carjacked an 82-year-old woman in Eustace. Her stolen Cadillac was found in the Wal-Mart parking lot.

The 19-year veteran officer will be placed on paid administrative leave, which is routine during the investigation of officer-involved shootings.

Surveillance video of the incident will be reviewed.
