Skubick: Tea Party players irrelevant?

If you really want to hack off the Tea Party players, you could tell them they are irrelevant.  No anti-government activist would want that label because it 's contrary to all the passion they jam into their efforts to transfigure government in their own image.

Enter the former GOP leader of the Michigan Senate who suggests the movement is this close to being just that…irrelevant.

Oh my. Kenny Sikkema is going to get letters on this.

"I'm not giving the Tea Party advice," the former Grand Rapids lawmaker waded into the us vs. them drama playing out in the state Republican Party.

"We've always had this tension in the Republican Party between the more conservatives and the slightly less conservative element."

He's spot on.  Harken back to the Rev. Pat Robertson riding his moral majority white horse into the Michigan Presidential primary back in the early 80's.  It was the good Rev. vs. George H.W. Bush who had the entrenched state GOP establishment mostly in his corner while the Reverend had everybody else. What resulted was an ugly breakdown at the state convention which fractured what party unity there was at the time, which was not much.

Fast forward thirty years later  as the T.P. folks are the new Robertsons' and Gov. Rick Snyder is not the objective of their affection.

Mr. Sikkema believes the Tea Party needs to stick to the facts, stop the intimidation and as far as dumping Lt. Gov. Brian Calley from the GOP ticket, "It's a move that could easily consign them to irrelevancy."

He also advises them to cut the politicians a little slack when they dare to disagree with the T.P. agenda.  "If you take the position that you have to support us on every single issue and if you don't, we're going to try to take you out…they run the risk of becoming irrelevant in the long term."

There's that word again.

Mr. Sikkema is not berating the objectives of these folks and applauds them for trying to reform things, but the tactics, he suggests need a re-do.
