Happier: Social Network Aims To Help Users Be Happier

Inspired by research in positive psychology and neuroscience, a Boston-based company has started a social networking site that aims to make users happier.

Users on "Happier" record and share three happy moments that happen in their day. They can also comment and give a smile to other people's happy moments. The site becomes a database of happy thoughts and appreciation that users can peruse through.

"With Happier, we've created this emotional space that allows you to elevate really small but really good things, which would otherwise just be routine. Doing that repeatedly has been scientifically proven to make you happier, and if you do it consistently, you can actually change the chemistry of your brain to be more positive," says the company co-founder Nataly Kogan.

The site also offers you suggestions in case you can't think of a happy moment. For example, one of the boxes may ask, "Hear a song you love?" Another box may ask, "Do something fun with family?"

Kogan's family escaped Soviet Russian when she was 13, and she spent her time in America pursuing the American dream. Despite graduating top of her class in college, holding top positions in firms, and even publishing a book, Kogan realized she still wasn't truly happy. That's when she turned to scientific research and realized that the right mindset was to say, "I am happier now because...."

She then launched Happier in 2012 and made it her mission to make millions of Americans happier with their every day lives. They released an iPhone app in February of 2013.
