Zoo Atlanta moves 500-pound tortoise to Knoxville Zoo

ATLANTA -

How do you move a 500-pound, 120-year-old tortoise?  Ask the folks from Zoo Atlanta.  They're working with the Knoxville Zoo on Friday to move Al, an Aldabra tortoise who is headed to Knoxville as part of the zoos' tortoise swap.

Zoo Atlanta and the Knoxville Zoo started their tortoise swap collaboration three years ago.  Al and another male tortoise named Tex have been living at Zoo Atlanta on loan from Knoxville. At the same time, Zoo Atlanta's three female tortoises, Corky, Patches and Stand-Up have been spending time in Knoxville.  The zoos hope periods of separation between males and females will renew their interest in breeding when they're put back together.

Another of Zoo Atlanta's male residents, Shuffles, will stay behind to get reacquainted with Corky and Stand-Up, who are headed south when Al heads north.  Likewise, Patches, a female currently living in Knoxville, will remain there to welcome Al.

Zoo Atlanta says Al has to be lifted into a truck to be transported, and because he's so heavy, it takes the effort of four to five men to get the job done.
