BROOKHAVEN, Ga. -

DeKalb County's newest city officially has officers patrolling the streets.  Brookhaven police officers got their start on Wednesday, and they're already making an impact.

A total of 52 officers are on patrol in Brookhaven, and they've been busy the last few days making sure their communities are safe and crime-free.  Officers made their first arrest within just a few hours of getting up and running.

Lieutenant Brandon Gurley says visibility is what residents will notice most since the officers on the Brookhaven force took over for DeKalb County police.

The new department was created in a little more than three months, and they still have two positions open.  They say so far, things have been working out well for their team.

Brookhaven police say there has been some confusion amongst residents who aren't sure to call in an emergency.  They say residents should continue to call 911 in case of any emergencies, and the DeKalb County communication office will redirect their calls to the appropriate agency.

The department is also still working to set up a permanent headquarters where residents will be able to pick up incident and accident reports.
