NEW YORK (AP) - For decades, the vaulted mosaic ceilings and sculpted figures in the lobby of the Woolworth Building were off limits to the public.

That's changing now.

The Wall Street Journal says small tour groups are being organized by the great-granddaughter of the building's architect.

Cass Gilbert designed the building for Frank Winfield Woolworth, the founder of the discount-store empire. It was the tallest building in world from 1913 to 1930.

Helen Post Curry, owner of a Connecticut design & event management firm called Look, had arranged tour groups for the building's centennial in April. They were so successful that the building's management has agreed to continue them on a trial basis.

Tours can be booked online at woolworthtours.com.

The building's exterior and interior received landmark status in 1983.

Subway bedbug infestations on the rise

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
