A mother is behind bars, accused of allowing her children to live in deplorable conditions.

After serving a drug search warrant at the home of 34-year-old Holly Pippin near 37th Street and Van Buren on August 3, officers found three children living in the apartment infested with bed bugs "on the floors, countertops, inside drawers and on the walls," according to the police report.

Officers say the infestation was so bad, they had to wear protective gloves and boots while searching the apartment to avoid contamination from the bugs.

Police say during an interview with Pippin, say she stated that the apartment belongs to her mother and she was aware of the bugs, but knew her children love their grandmother and don't want to leave -- allowing them to live in the apartment.  They were living in the residence since July 17.

Even though the bugs were located in every area of the home, the children, who are between the ages of 11 and 16, were not wearing shoes.  Pippin told police they were sleeping on a bed in the apartment for several days.

Authorities say Pippin and her mother both admitted to having a methamphetamine addiction and smoke the drug on a regular basis.  Officers found used glass meth pipes inside the residence.

In the report, it was noted that Pippin's mother is accused of selling "methamphetamine from the apartment to various drug abusers who frequent the location."

Pippin is facing three counts of child abuse.

Child Protective Services was notified of the situation and have begun their own investigation into this case.

The children are now in the care of their stepmother.
