CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The public will get a chance to submit input to the Chicago Department of Transportation for improvements they would like to see made on Lake Shore Drive from Grand to Hollywood.

City planners would like those who actually use the main thoroughfare to help shape renovation plans for the 7-mile stretch. But don't worry, there is time to talk. The overhaul is scheduled to take place no less than five years from now, and will likely cost hundreds of millions of dollars.

Some ideas for improvement that are already out there include lower speed limits, bus-only lanes for shorter public transit rides, improved access to the lakefront and making the drive more compatible with city boulevards as opposed to expressways. CDOT officials are also considering shoreline expansion, to prevent overcrowding and provide a place for flood water to go during heavy storms that cause high waves to splash onto the drive.

The Illinois Department of Transportation also conferred with CDOT to create a list of priorities that include reshaping the Oak Street curve to prevent accidents, streamlining traffic flow as Hollywood and Belmont, consolidating some ramps to avert dangerous driving patterns we've all experienced when driving next to those in a rush.

You can voice your ideas any of these open meetings this month:

  • Aug. 6 at Gill Park, third-floor meeting room, 825 W. Sheridan Road. 6 to 8 p.m.
  • Aug. 7 in the atrium of Truman College, 1145 W. Wilson Ave. 6 to 8 p.m.
  • Aug. 8 in the South Gallery of the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, 2340 N. Cannon Drive. 6 to 8 p.m.
