A woman who allegedly tried to kill her fiancé with help from her son and his friend went on trial Tuesday.
Vicky Renee Miller is accused attempting to murder Paul Key on Nov. 21, 2011.
Court documents reveal the two met at Lipstick Caberet where Miller worked as a dancer. They reportedly got engaged in less than 30 minutes and were in a relationship for about three years until Key ended it.
Key testified he was trying to get his belongings from Miller's apartment on the day of the attack. He said he sat down and then "felt the [extension] cord being placed around my neck and I started to be strangled."
The victim said he didn't see who tried to strangle him, but saw Miller's son Francisco Hurtado hit him in the head with a frying pan as he tried to get away.
Police said after Key escaped, Miller, Hurtado and his friend, Dunkan Thomas Boyce, tried to make it look like they were the victims. They allegedly staged a struggle, called 911 and told people Key was off his medication.
The defense is expected to question Key about his history with mental illness and the fact that he didn't see Miller holding the extension cord.
Hurtado and Boyce are still awaiting trial.
If convicted, Miller faces up to 20 years in prison.
