State program helping seniors drive longer, and safer

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Aging is a part of life. As we get older, it can become more and more difficult to manage a cornerstone of our day-to-day life – driving a car.

One organization is helping, though, by working with drivers who are senior citizens to make sure their car fits, literally. The goal is to make sure seniors drive safer and longer, with the assistance of a few helpful checkpoints and changes that can make a world of difference on the road.

Andrew Turnage, a coordinator for GTIPI, said, "We're looking at key things that will make them safer. It's going to help them drive longer."

The program is run by volunteers with the Georgia Traffic Injury Prevention Institute. The latter is run out of the University of Georgia and paid for by a grant from the Governor's Office of Highway Safety.

Many of the drivers taking part in the program have been behind the wheel since before any technology existed in vehicles beyond the gas and brake pedal. The group not only reviews current auto technology, but also the physical limitations that can affect an older driver on the road.
