Rochester man loses portion of his tongue in dog attack

Posted: Updated:
PONTIAC, Mich. (WJBK) -

A 33-year-old Rochester man visited a friend that had a pit bull Wednesday evening on the 800 block of North Perry in Pontiac.

"I understand that the man who got bit was a friend of the owner of the dog, and he was trying to make nice with the dog," said Pontiac City Council Member Mary Pietila.

Investigators say the man invaded the personal space of the pit bull. He stuck his tongue out face-to-face with the dog.

"The dog got his tongue. From what I understand, it was the better part of a tongue, a good chunk. Star EMS addressed it, and the dog had some meat, let's put it that way," Pietila.

"It's always recommended that people should always approach animals with caution, that they shouldn't just go up to them right away. They might seem friendly, but you should never get on their level, in their face," said Nikki Woodcraft, a veterinarian technician with Oakland Veterinary Referral Services in Bloomfield Hills.

"Some dogs don't show signs whatsoever. They could be wagging their tail, their ears might be up, they might be having their tongue out like they're all happy-go-lucky, and then all of a sudden they just snap. So you should always make sure that you're very cautious when you're approaching an animal like that."

The victim was taken to McLaren Hospital for treatment. A friend told us he lost 40 percent of his tongue and two pints of blood. He is home recovering.

The friend also said the victim does plan to press charges.

It's believed the dog swallowed the severed portion of the man's tongue.

According to Oakland County Sheriff's deputies, the dog was involved in another bite incident about four months ago. Oakland County Animal Control has ordered the animal quarantined for the next ten days.
