Ten-Month Old Girl Gets Lifesaving Heart Transplant

Posted: Updated:

Brooklyn Reyes got a heart transplant Sept 3. Her mom Veronica Reyes-Ledesma posted this on Facebook:

"Today begins a new chapter in our lives that I will embrace with full force. I will continue to raise awareness for organ donation for those families that are still in search for their golden heart. Our Brooklyn is witnessed hope for those families."

From 8/09:

How do you feel about organ donation? For yourself? For your children, should the unthinkable happen? Well if you're on the fence, take a look at 9 month old Brooklyn Reyes. Brooklyn was born with an enlarged heart that can't pump blood to the rest of her body.  For the past several months she's been in Children's Hospital Los Angeles, tethered to an artificial heart that does the pumping her own heart is unable to do. The device, called The Berlin Heart,  has enabled Brooklyn to survive and to grow, but she's never been able to go home to her family.

Her mom, Miriam Reyes-Ledesma, told me that before Brooklyn was born she had a lot of reservations about organ donation. Her instinct was that people who die tragically "should be buried whole."  But her experience as Brooklyn's mom has opened her eyes to the impact an organ donor can have on the life and family of a child who needs an organ.

Brooklyn's condition is severe. She is now number#1 for children her size on the Heart Transplant Waiting List.

Miriam decided to share Brooklyn's story to put a face on just one life that might be saved through the gift of organ donation.
