DETROIT (WJBK) -

An off-duty Homeland Security officer is recovering after being shot by suspected car thieves on the city's west side.

Police say the suspects were attempting to steal an SUV in the area of Greenview and Fenkell around 6:30 a.m. Monday. A gun fight broke out and the officer was struck in the arm. Neighbors, including Norman Woodley, tell FOX 2 they heard five shots.

"I just tried to keep him calm," said Woodley, who helped the officer, whose name was not released. "He had a tourniquet he had tied around himself and he said he had motion in his hand."

Police say the officer was listed in temporary serious condition following the shooting.

The suspects fled after the shooting. Police say a trail of blood leads them to believe on the suspects was shot during the gunfight.
