Ancient artifact stolen from Peachtree City nature area

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -

Authorities are working to determine how and why an ancient artifact was stolen out of Peachtree City.

A large petroglyph was taken from the Line Creek Nature Area.  The 75 to 80 pound boulder-size petroglyph of a sun vanished a week ago. Its absence was noted by a volunteer on a monthly site check.

Pam Young, the executive director of Southern Conservation Trust, which manages the Nature Area for Peachtree City, says the petroglyph was likely carved by Native Americans and may date back to before Columbus discovered the New World. She's asking who ever took the ancient carving to return it.

Young says Trust members at one point had discussed,  but decided against, putting up any kind of a barrier or marker on the petroglyph, opting instead to leave it in its' natural form.

"Bottom line is it was theft because even though it's a public area, it was taken without permission," Young said.

Young hopes the petroglyph finds its way back to its place of origin.

"If we don't respect and conserve our natural resources, then they're not going to be here for our children and their grandchildren," Young said.
