NORTH WILDWOOD, N.J. (AP) -- Police officers in a New Jersey beach town have gotten a crash course in the important role service dogs play in helping disabled vets.

The lesson came after an officer in North Wildwood wrongly ordered a disabled vet to remove his dog from the boardwalk last Thursday.

Army veteran Jared Goering of Tampa, Fla., was cited for having a dog on the boardwalk even though the animal had a service dog ID.

Police moved quickly to dismiss the summons after Goering complained.

But Goering told WMGM-TV he was deeply upset. A veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, he uses the dog to help him walk and for emotional support.

Police Chief Matthew Gallagher says all his officers have received materials on the role of trained dogs in helping disabled vets. He promises "this type of incident will not happen again."
