Crime Is Up On The Ballona Creek Bike Path...Or Is It?

Posted: Updated:

There is no doubt what happened to Bill Fournell is horrible. Last month, he was riding home on Ballona Creek Bike Path.  He spotted three teens alongside the path. As he rode closer to them, according to him, two teens ran away, but the third teen threw a bike into his path, causing him to crash. He suffered a broken collar bone, cracked ribs and a punctured lung and wound up in the hospital for five days. He is on the road to recovery and is looking forward to riding his bike again. But unwittingly, he's become sort of the poster child for increased security along the path.

Two weeks ago, Nancy Adzentoivich started a petition to Culver City Council to assign police patrols to the path. Already, more than 400 have signed the petition. She told me, she'll present the petition to the city council when the petition is signed by 500. In the petition, she references the attack on Bill Fournell on the bike path, but that's the only verified crime. FOX 11 called the Culver City Police who said, that in the category of violent crime, Fournell's is the only one in a year. There have been a couple of calls complaining of vandalism.. a half dozen worried about someone suspicious, but nothing, police say,  that would qualify as a crime spike on the path. That's little solace for Nancy who said, that members of the Los Angeles Triathlete Club say they're feeling unsafe.

Culver City Police are still looking for Fournell's assailant along with that investigation, they've increased motorcycle and foot patrols along and around the path.

I met the folks from Gunnar Optiks at CES this year and they had something new to show me. The Intercepts. I have a big head, these are big frames, it was kismet but do they work as good as they look? We'll see.
