OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. (WJBK) -

Spirit Filled Wings is a home-based raptor rehabilitation center in Oakland County run by Linda Bianco. She works with birds of prey such as hawks and owls.

"I started working with them, and it was just almost like an instant this is where I belong," she said. "We don't get paid, and we're not funded."

Bianco does it for the love of these amazing creatures. Many of them come to her injured or sick, and she nurses them back to health so they can return to the wild.

"The birds that come here are hit by cars. A lot of people shoot the birds. I don't know why," she said.

Others are poisoned or caught in traps. Bianco gets more than 100 birds every year from people referred to her by vets or the DNR. Her elaborate setup includes cameras in all the cages so she can constantly monitor the birds in her care.

Extremely sick birds are brought to an indoor rehab facility. Some have West Nile virus, and unfortunately, not all of them can be saved.

"On a good year probably 50 percent of the birds that come in make it," she said. "Even if I know they're at death's door, I'm going to do the most that I can to save them."

Bianco said she raises just enough money to fund her unique calling that has involved years of training and getting licenses, not to mention the countless hours of round the clock care to give our feather friends that are injured a fighting chance.
