I-Team: National spike in young adults moving back home

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

The trend of young adults moving back in with mom and dad to save money, pay off school loans or just to get back on their feet. But, recently there's a spike in this trend with more sons and daughters moving back home than at any time since the 1950's.

But, part of the trade-off might be the stigma attached to staying too long. Apparently, that's not so anymore. Now, adult children are going home and staying awhile.

New numbers from the Pew Research Center show that 39 percent of young people between the ages of 18 and 34 living with their parents. And, of course, many parents want to help support their children moving forward, but staying with mom and dad can actually be harmful. Pew says it could delay taking on adult responsibilities that nurture personal growth and development.

In fact, one noted therapist say extended stays at home can cause some young adults to regress.

So, what to do if you're a parent and this happens to you?

  1. Make sure son or daughter is paying rent
  2. Make sure they're helping with chores
  3. Set a time limit

Financial experts strongly advise parents not to dip into their retirement savings to help pay off their son or daughter's car not or high-interest card. You don't want to jeopardize your own financial future.

Here's the sure fire way to stay on budget at the grocery store: Plan your menu in advance, make a list then stick to it. So how is it that you're still spending more than you should and ending up with less than you need? Because too many of us shop at the wrong time.

A credit card balance can easily get out of control. You can chip away at that debt by transferring the balance to a lower interest card.  But, before you jump on that great offer, hit 'pause'. It's not for everyone.
