Fire truck collides with SUV en route to house fire
By FOX 10 News Staff
A fire truck heading to a house fire collided with an SUV near 7th Street and Indian School Road on Friday morning.
Four firefighters were headed to a fire near 12th Street and Indian School Road when the vehicles crashed about 3:15 a.m., causing the fire truck to roll over onto its side.
"He did cross over onto basically a sidewalk, took out a bus stop, which fortunately there was nobody there and then at that time just the amount of motion and just the sheer weight of it, actually turned that vehicle onto its side," says Phoenix Fire Capt. Jonathan Jacobs.
"We try to keep it in a straight a line as we possibly can, but just the energy that's involved with that, just brought that truck over on its side."
The driver of the SUV and the firefighters were taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Crews used two tow trucks to lift the massive truck back onto its wheels.
Investigators are working to figure out how the crash happened. The fire truck had its lights and sirens on. It is policy for fire engines to stop at intersections even when they are responding to emergencies.
