DC fire department to hire paramedics to address shortage

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

The District is currently facing a serious paramedic issue and is presenting a new idea that is getting mixed reviews.

On Thursday, Deputy Mayor of Public Safety Paul Quander wrote on Twitter: "Up until recently, our mandate has been to hire paramedics who are also firefighters. We have lots of people with the proper certifications who want to be paramedics for us, but don't want to run into burning buildings."

But the union which represents firefighters in D.C. worries that this is not a good policy.

"Having someone who is trained as a firefighter and a paramedic is mutually beneficial for to the department and the employee,” said Dabney Hudson, second vice president of the firefighter’s union.

An interview request with Deputy Mayor Quander was turned down. No word at this point when the new policy could be implemented.
