Atlanta events to mark 50th anniversary of March on Washington

ATLANTA -

Excitement is building for the commemoration for the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington.

Although the celebration itself will take place in Washington, D.C. it kicks off Saturday in Atlanta.

Dr. Martin Luther King's youngest daughter, Bernice, said the celebration will begin in Atlanta with an international expo in the historic Auburn Avenue district.

Bernice King, the CEO of the King Center, said that it's fitting that the 8-day celebration will begin where the civil rights leader was nurtured.

"You probably won't find situated in most historic districts, so many places associated with one individual and then a first generation family still living," King said. "You have his birth home. You have his spiritual birth home, being the church."

The Atlanta celebration will include tours of the King birth home, a replica of the bus Rosa Parks sat on in 1955, plus a town hall meeting on the Voting Rights Act.

The historic celebration will culminate in Washington, D.C. with speeches by President Barack Obama, former presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton and other.

There will also be an international bell ringing at the precise moment King gave that historic speech in 1963.

Saturday's activities in Atlanta are free and open to the public. The celebration begins at 3 p.m. and goes until 9 p.m.
