There was so much excitement about the 2011 opening of a Waco restaurant that FOX 4 ventured there for a taste test. Now a couple years later, Heather Hays finds out whatever happened to Fat Ho Burgers.
In March 2011, the place to go satisfy your craving in Waco was a burger joint opened by 23-year-old Lakita Evans.
There were long lines for lunch and people seemed to like the hamburgers with names like the Supa Dupa Fly Ho with Cheese or the Sloppy Ho Brisket.
"It's not calling people a ho. It's just like they say, 'Oooh that ho is big or that ho is tight!'" Evan said at the time. "Why cry and be depressed. The economy is bad. Somebody gotta keep a sense of humor around here."
But not everybody was laughing. In fact, neighbors at a gospel cafe were offended.
"Would've been nice to think a little more sensitively," Pastor Marsha Martie had said.
After a lot of attention in those first few weeks, things quieted down. Fat Ho Burgers closed its doors in October 2011.
It reopened in a Waco convenience store in March 2012, but again closed a few months later.
There is no word on any plans to try again.
