Students return to class after death of football player

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. -

Students returned back to class at Creekside High School on Monday, days after the tragic death of a popular student athlete.

DeAntre Turman died after being injured during a preseason football game Friday night against the Banneker Trojans.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office tells FOX 5 News that Turman fractured his third cervical vertebrae during the third quarter of the scrimmage game when he was playing defense.

Fulton County Schools Athletic Director Steven Craft met with administrators at Creekside High on Monday afternoon. District officials offered their support in the wake of Friday's tragedy.

"Deepest sympathies and condolence to the player's family, the community, I think that when you have a tragedy like this, it makes you reflect on everything and we want our focus to be on the family and the community and try to help them deal with this tragedy," Craft said.

Hundreds of people attended a prayer vigil honoring the teen in Atlanta on Sunday.

Counselors were dispatched to Banneker and Creekside on Monday morning to meet with students and staff.

Craft said that the district believes it has adequate plans and emergency staff in place in the event of a medical emergency during school sporting events, but the district will review its procedures.

"We're still in the process of reviewing everything and we will continue to look at it, and if we feel like we need to make changes with our policies then we will," Craft said.

Turman told FOX 5's Deidra Dukes that he believes ambulances should be in place for possible emergencies at all sporting events statewide.

Students at Creekside High are planning a memorial for Turman.
