Investigation Shows Red Light Cameras Potentially Cheating NJ Drivers

Posted: Updated:

Red Light Cameras were created to increase safety at intersections, and according to safety experts, they reduce right angle crashes.

But New Jersey State Assemblyman Declan O'Scanlon sharply disagrees.

"These companies don't give a damn about safety, they use it as a veil to reach into our pockets," he says."

Recently, O'Scanlon worked with an expert in video timing at numerous intersections throughout New Jersey, and what he found was that the yellow lights at many red light camera locations are shorter than the time proscribed by the Department of Transportation. For example, in a 40 mile per hour zone, the light should stay on yellow for exactly 4 seconds. But in places like Communipaw Avenue and JFK Boulevard in Jersey City, the yellow lights were changing even faster.

"Even if you just stop a foot off that white line, it goes off." Daniel Lennon says he's fed up with the red light cameras.

"What do you wanna do, get a ticket, or slam your breaks on, which can cause accidents. What I did in the past was slam my breaks, skid it to a halt, just so I wouldn't get a ticket," he says.

O'Scanlon showed his videos to the New Jersey DOT, which has now directed 21 municipalities to suspend issuing red light tickets, until the lights match up to yellow light timing requirements.

New Jersey announced in April that it had suspended plans to add more red-light cameras before next December.

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
