AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz says he will renounce his Canadian citizenship.

The Texas Republican and tea party favorite announced his plans in a statement Monday night. The comes in the wake of a report by The Dallas Morning News that Cruz holds dual U.S. and Canadian citizenship. The News cites Cruz's Canadian birth certificate that lists his Cuban father and his Delaware-born mother.

Cruz says his mother told him as a child that he could claim Canadian citizenship if he wanted, and he got his U.S. passport in high school. In light of the newspaper report, Cruz now says he will renounce his Canadian citizenship.
