A man accused in an Oklahoma murder and child abduction case is now in custody following an early morning standoff in Lewisville.
Lewisville police spokesman Capt. Jay Powell said SWAT teams surrounded the Fairfield Marriott hotel near the Vista Ridge Mall around 3 a.m. Wednesday. Some rooms in the hotel were also evacuated.
At first officers had trouble making contact with 37-year-old Robert Leroy Connor III, who is wanted in connection with an Amber Alert for 6-year-old Decklan Connor. Powell said he was likely asleep.
But officers were eventually able to reach him on a hotel loudspeaker around 7 a.m. He came out of his room and surrendered. The boy was found unharmed inside the room, Powell said.
Sheriff's deputies in Oklahoma said earlier this week Conner shot and killed his own mother over a money dispute and then ran off with his son. A second child who witnessed the shooting was not hurt.
Investigators found Conner in North Texas by pinging his cell phone. They spotted his car in the hotel parking lot.
Powell said officers feared that the situation could end badly and are pleased that it didn't.
Conner is now facing murder and kidnapping charges. He is being held in the Lewisville jail.
Family members are expected to take custody of the boy.
