Many New Yorkers heed hepatitis warning

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

People continue to line up to receive a free hepatitis vaccination shot after news broke that a food handler at Westside Market on the Upper West Side tested positive for the liver disease, which is caused by a virus.

Health officials are urging anyone who may have eaten cut fruit either directly from the store or from its catering service between August 9 and August 22 to get vaccinated because you can prevent the disease from occurring if you get the shot within 14 days of exposure, health officials said.

"We are asking these store patrons to get this vaccination as a precautionary measure," said Dr. Thomas Farley, the health commissioner. "If people experience symptoms, they should see a doctor immediately. This incident serves as an important reminder to always wash your hands thoroughly to prevent the spread of disease."

You can get vaccinated at your doctor's office. However, you can also get a free shot from the Health Department through Monday, August 26, at Middle School 258/Community Action School, 154 West 93rd Street. If you have health insurance, please bring your insurance card with you.

Sunday, August 25, 2 - 6 p.m.

Monday, August 26, 2 - 8 p.m.
