A judge acquitted the Dallas County district attorney on a contempt-of-court citation.
State District Judge Bob Brotherton of Wichita Falls was brought in for a hearing Friday for the case against District Attorney Craig Watkins.
In March Watkins refused to answer allegations that his office prosecuted an heir to an oil fortune as a favor to a friend and campaign donor. State District Judge Lena Levario held him in contempt and threw out the mortgage fraud cases against the heir, Al Hill III.
Watkins could have faced a $500 fine. Instead Judge Brotherton said the initial hearing was improper and the subpoena to Watkins was defective.
The mortgage fraud case has attracted the attention of the FBI, which has asked for access to Watkins' files.
