Dewhurst speaks for first time since controversial phone call

Posted: Updated:

Lt. Governor David Dewhurst says he only wanted to know what the process would be for getting his nephew's wife out of jail when he made a controversial call to the Allen Police Department earlier this month.

"I was concerned", Dewhurst told reporters on Saturday, "I was a very concerned uncle and I made it crystal clear that I didn't expect or deserve any special treatment."

His nephew's wife, Ellen Bevers, was arrested for shoplifting at a Kroger.  In the call to Allen Police, Dewhurst repeatedly identified himself as the Lieutenant Governor and asked how he could get Bevers out of jail.

Bevers did spend the night in the Collin County Jail.  Her attorney says it's all a mistake, adding that Bevers went through the self-checkout and forgot to scan some items.
