SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (myFOXDetroit.com) -

Around 2AM Monday morning, an off duty Detroit police officer was at Sutton Place Apartments, a complex in Southfield near 9 Mile Rd. and Lahser. He was getting out of his vehicle, a Dodge Charger, when police say he was approached by a group of teenagers. Two are said to have been armed with revolvers, and a third with an airsoft handgun. One is said to have had his weapon drawn.

"Fearing for his safety, [the officer] fired several rounds and struck one suspect," said Southfield Lt. Nick Louissa.

Police say one of the suspects, a 17-year-old male, died at the scene. His identity has not been released. The others ran.

Police have now tracked down and arrested the three teens suspected of the attempted carjacking. They also found a revolver that one of the suspects dropped when he started running away.

The Detroit officer involved has been placed on administrative duty while the investigation continues. The three surviving suspects are likely to be charged as adults.
