Marilyn Hagerty, a veteran food reviewer for the Grand Forks Herald newspaper in North Dakota, gave an Olive Garden restaurant a glowing review last year.
Quickly, food writers from across the country slammed her for the article.
"I've been doing this for 20, 30 years. All of a sudden, things go crazy. I get a message saying 'your review is pathetic.' That started it," said Hagerty.
But supporters also came to Hagerty's defense and that lead to a book offer and unexpected fame.
"It's been overwhelming. All of a sudden I'm hearing for people all over the country," said Hagerty.
Celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain was among the people who showed their support.
"He feels it's a story about eating in America that has not been told," said Hagerty.
The mother of three and grandmother of eight says she's proud of her new book, Grand Forks A History of American Dining.
