GRIFFIN, Ga. -

A Spalding County preschooler is facing disciplinary action after officials say the child took a gun to an elementary school on Tuesday.  The weapon was found just as students were being released for the day, and the incident has left many parents stunned.

Letters were sent home to Jordan Hill Elementary School parents explaining the situation.  Authorities say the gun was loaded, and it was another preschooler who told a teacher that the student had a gun inside a backpack.  When the teacher looked inside the backpack, the discovery was made.

Griffin-Spalding County Schools spokesperson Judy Parker said a deputy on site for dismissal at the school secured the gun once it was discovered.  She said it's not clear if the weapon was brought from home, and the sheriff's department is still investigating the circumstances.

No other information given about the student involved.  They say it's too early to determine how the child will be punished, or whether any charges will be brought against the child's parents.
