Man with alleged road rage follows off-duty officer, causes crash

Updated:
TUCSON, Ariz. -

Foothills District deputies say an off-duty officer was a victim of road rage before the angry driver caused a crash near Thornydale Road and Cortaro Farms.

An off-duty Tucson Police officer, who was driving an unmarked vehicle, nearly collided with a truck driven by 38-year-old Eric Santos when merging onto a highway.

Santos allegedly continued to follow closely behind the officer and at one point, allegedly rammed and pushed the officer's vehicle.

Deputies say the officer called 911 after Santos continued to follow him.

As the officer approached a red light, he checked to make sure the intersection was clear and ran the red light to avoid a confrontation with Santos.

When Santos reached the intersection, deputies say he ran the red light and collided with a car.

Santos and the driver of the car were taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Deputies say charges are pending.
