John Catsimatidis stumps for support in Queens

Posted: Updated:

You might say everything about New York City Republican mayoral candidate John Catsimatidis is big: his stature, his smile, his personality, and, yes, his billion-dollar bank account.

Right now the Greek-born and Harlem-raised Republican needs some "big" help to win his party's nomination.

New Yorkers may know him best as the founder of Manhattan's largest grocery chain, Gristede's. Married with two grown children, he has many other ventures including a newspaper, a real estate business, and an oil refining company.

The proud self-described workaholic laughs off critics who say he is trying to buy the office or that he is not qualified.

Even critics would agree his accomplishments in business are impressive when you consider his humble beginnings in east Harlem.

His top priorities should he win:

  • Keep streets safe; do not give our streets back to the criminals
  • Freeze taxes we are chasing enough people away
  • Be sensitive to small businesses needs

He said he likes Mayor Mike Bloomberg and President Bill Clinton, has a problem with President Barack Obama, loves Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, and said Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott "is good."
