Police are trying to find out what caused a series of chain-reaction crashes involving over a dozen vehicles on Interstate 85 near the exit to the Mall of Georgia in Gwinnett County on Saturday afternoon.

A spokesperson for the Gwinnett County Police Department tells FOX 5 News that about 20 vehicles were involved in the crash including a jackknifed tractor trailer. Both sides of the interstate between Georgia Highway 20 and Hamilton Mill Road were closed to allow for emergency crews to work the scene.

Officials say 12 people were transported to area hospitals including one child who was transported to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite. Five more people were treated at the scene for minor bumps and bruises.

Investigators are looking into the possibility that weather played a factor in the accident. FOX 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Ken Cook says the highway would have been saturated from a strong storm cell that moved through the area just after 5 p.m. FOX 5 Live VIPIR Radar indicated the cell dumped heavy rain on the interstate for at least 20 minutes leading up to the accident.

Traffic returned to normal along the stretch of the interstate shortly before 10 p.m.
