LeRoy Martin, former Chicago police superintendent, dies at 84

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Former Chicago police Supt. LeRoy Martin, who led the department from 1987 until 1992, died Saturday at the age of 84.

Martin was appointed superintendent by the late Mayor Harold Washington and also served under former Mayor Richard M. Daley. He joined the department in 1955 and worked there for 36 years, retiring as superintendent.

He died Saturday from heart failure in Dyer, Ind. The department confirmed his death, releasing a statement extending its "sincerest condolences."

Martin oversaw the department while detectives were accused of torturing suspects - nearly all of them black.

The Southtown Star says Martin received a report about the attacks led by former Cmdr. Jon Burge, but dismissed it initially, saying the report had "flawed and unsubstantiated" methodology.

But he later ordered hearings that led to Burge's dismissal.

He was the second African American to serve as superintendent of the Chicago department, succeeding Supt. Fred Rice.

After leaving the police department, Martin went to work for the Cook County medical examiner's office, where he was chief of investigations.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
