Firefighters Still Battling 11-Alarm Warehouse Fire

Posted: Updated:
DELANCO, N.J. -

Almost 24 hours later, a massive warehouse fire continues to burn in Burlington County as hundreds of firefighters from dozens of stations try to gain control of the flames.

The fire at Dietz and Watson's main cold storage facility off Cooperstown Road in Delanco went up in flames Sunday around 2 p.m. and eventually went to 11 alarms.

Firefighters providing an update from the scene shortly after 6 a.m. said they had it 50 percent contained.

But around 12:30 p.m. Monday, FOX 29's Dave Kinchen tweeted a photo that shows smoke still billowing from the center of the building.

Thick, black smoke could be seen from at least 20 miles away at the heigh of the blaze.

Firefighters ran into several problems, like hazardous chemicals inside the building, energized solar panels on the roof and even running out of water.

The fire actually spread throughout the roof in a gap and insulation situated above the smoke detectors and sprinklers but below the solar-panel rooftop.

On Monday morning, New Jersey American Water was pumping from a Delran treatment plant and two wells to assist Delanco firefighting efforts.

Fire crews came from as far away as Somers Point to help try to put down the still smoldering fire Monday.

The head of Deitz & Watson said most of the 130 warehouse employees in Delanco will report to the company's Philadelphia factory and continue to work, distributing product.

There was no word on the company's estimated losses due to the building damage and loss of product inside.

Officials say two people suffered minor injuries. One was the local fire chief, who sprained an ankle shortly after arriving on scene but continued to organize crews until he finally let an EMS crew look at it after midnight.

There's no word yet on the cause.

As we mentioned, this fire could be seen for miles this afternoon, and viewers sent us many UReports photos and videos of the smoke visible throughout the area. You can check out their images by clicking here, or see them all on our UReport page: http://ureport.myfoxphilly.com/#gallery/9549.
