The big winners of the 2013 Big Tex Choice Awards aren't for the sweet tooth.
In a competition that usually rewards the latest fried sugary concoction, it was the Deep Fried Cuban Roll and Fried Thanksgiving Dinner that won top honors.
The Deep Fried Cuban Roll won Best Tasting and Fried Thanksgiving Dinner won Most Creative.
The battle to come up with the most unique State Fair of Texas food item means big business to the winners, as fairgoers regularly line-up to try the fried creations.
Fair officials describe the Deep Fried Cuban Roll as a filling of slow cooked pork shoulder, chopped ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, and secret sauce is spread onto a slice of Swiss cheese, rolled up in pastry dough, and deep fried, according to fair officials, and served with mojo sauce.
Fried Thanksgiving Dinner is homemade stuffing and diced roasted turkey rolled in a ball, then dipped in southern cream corn and rolled in seasoned corn meal - all fried to a crispy golden brown. It's served with brown gravy and orange cranberry sauce.
The Cuban Roll was created by Isaac Rousso and Fried Thanksgiving Dinner was created by Justin and Rudy Martinez.
