SMU investigating sex assault at Sigma Alpha Epsilon house

Posted: Updated:

SMU police are investigating a sexual assault that occurred at a fraternity house on Sunday night.

SMU officials confirm a woman unaffiliated with the school said she was sexually assaulted in a room at the Sigma Alpha Epsilon house about 8:30 p.m. on Sunday.

The alleged suspect is an SMU student and is an acquaintance of the woman.

The woman reported the assault to SMU police and the incident is being investigated.

SMU's 2013-14 school year began last Monday.

SMU officials created a sexual assault task force last school year after the school came under fire for the way it handled and reported assaults on the campus.

Among the suggestions were having after-hours counselors for sex assault victims, allowing students to report incidents anonymously and creating a course for students to take that discussed sexual assaults and good citizenship.
