Teacher's Union Will Discuss Next Steps In Contract Negotiations

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Philadelphians didn't let this morning's showers rain out their parade. Hundreds of union workers made their way down Columbus Boulevard, supporting their fellow workers.

In about an hour, the teacher's union will meet to discuss what its next steps will be on contract negotiations. Their current contract expired over the weekend. Their new contract is one of the biggest labor issues in the city right now, with school starting one week from today.

And since it is labor day, many of the city's teachers marched in the annual Philadelphia Labor Day parade.

Last week, the teacher's union president Jerry Jordan recommended that teachers agree to a wage freeze and agree to contribute to their healthcare costs. Negotiations with the district have been going on since January. The district currently wants more than $100,000,000 in concessions from the union as it works to close a $300,000,000 budget deficit.

At the parade, teachers reacted to Jordan's plan.

"I don't think it is fair because the teachers didn't put the school system in this financial crisis. But now that we're down to the nuts and bolts of the matter we need to find the funds to educate our children," said Tyrone Mebane."I think it's a shame they're saying we have to give as much as we give."

"I think it's fair. We do want to help. Each of us can do that if we have to," says Jayne Downing, a Librarian.

Both the union and district have said that they are continuing to work towards a new deal. School is expected to open on time on September 9th.

The union president will speak around 8:15 p.m. Tonight. He will talk about the status of the contract negotiations. Watch FOX 29 news at 10 p.m. for updates.
