Richard Chrisman took the stand in his own defense on Tuesday. It's the first time we've heard from the former Phoenix Police officer.

Chrisman is accused of shooting and killing an unarmed man. On the stand all day, he looked calm and confident.

But he did get emotional when talking about the shooting.

Richard Chrisman wipes away tears when talking about the moments leading up to shooting and killing Daniel Rodriguez.

Chrisman: "I came back down and I gave him commands get down get down get down on the ground now."

"Does he comply?"

Chrisman told the jury Rodriguez tried to grab his service gun twice -- then he said Rodriguez tried to hit him with a bike.

"When you took a step back what happens?"

Chrisman: "He raises the bicycle up and tries to hit me."

"What do you think he's going to do with that bicycle?"

Chrisman: "He's going to smash my brains in."

"So what do you do?"

Chrisman: "I fire two rounds, center mass."

Chrisman testified he pulled Rodriguez past criminal history as he drove to the domestic violence call. Chrisman said he saw past arrests for dangerous drugs and a weapons violation. He said Rodriguez looked like he was on meth.

"He had this thousand yard stare in his eyes, he was very angry, his cheeks were sunk in."

Chrisman also claims fellow officer Sergio Virgillo was outside of the trailer and didn't see the shooting. As Chrisman was cross-examined by Juan Martinez, he did admit he didn't see the bullets, shotgun shells or bow and arrow inside of the trailer before he shot Rodriguez.

Martinez: "You were not concerned for your safety due to those shotgun shells and those bullets."

Chrisman: "No I couldn't see 'em."

And Juan Martinez did raise his voice a few times but Chrisman didn't react.

Testimony will continue Wednesday.
