5th-grader caught with knife at Griffin-Spalding school

GRIFFIN, Ga. -

A fifth-grader brought a knife to Atkinson Elementary School on Tuesday, according to a post on the Griffin-Spalding County School System's Facebook page.

According to the Facebook page, a teacher discovered the knife and immediately contacted school administration.  The knife was then secured.

The post says the student's parent and law enforcement have been notified about the incident.

Griffin-Spalding County School System guidelines forbid students from bringing any type of weapon onto school property.  School officials urge parents to check their students belongings before they leave for school.

School officials did not comment on why the child had the knife.

Tuesday's incident marks the third time in a week that a Spalding County student has been caught with a weapon at school.  Last Wednesday, a loaded gun was found in a preschooler's backpack at Jordan Hill Elementary School.  And on Friday, a third grader brought a knife and two bullets to Futral Elementary School.
