3 arrested; burglary leads to officer-involved shooting

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

Three suspects are in police custody after an attempted burglary in DeKalb County escalated into an officer-involved shooting, police said.

About 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, a 62-year-old woman who'd barricaded herself in her closet called 911 and her husband, James Norwood, to tell them she thought burglars had broken into her Decatur home.

The woman's husband raced home from Covington as the burglars made their way through the home.

When police officers got to her home, they walked to the rear entrance and saw that it looked like it had been forced open. They first found the woman in her bedroom and got her safely out of the house.

"He was in the closet – one of them -- with her when the cops arrived," said Norwood. "He didn't see her, but she was hiding behind the door."

K-9 units brought in to assist with the search of the home later found two suspects hiding in the attic. They were arrested. Their names have not been released.

During officers' search for the third suspect, a K-9 keyed in on a shed located behind a home in the 2800 block of Leisure Springs Circle. Police said when the suspect noticed officers closing in on him, he forcefully burst out of the shed. A DeKalb County officer opened fire, striking the suspect.

The suspect suffered non-life threatening injuries, police said. He was transported to a local hospital for medical attention. His name has not been released by police.

Norwood praised DeKalb County police for their quick action.

"Someone said to me, ‘It's a good thing she was at home,' and I said, ‘No, I wish she hadn't been at home, because it would have been a better thing for them to just take what they wanted and leave because all that can be replaced, but I can't replace her,'" said Norwood.
