Posted: Updated:

A Denton Guyer football player was accidentally shot in the head and killed by his friend Montague County Sheriff's officials said Tuesday.

Police found Nathan Maki's body near Bowie on Saturday in Montague County. Maki, 18, was accidentally shot in the head by Michael Bryce Underwood, Maki's 17-year-old friend, according to officials.

Friends said Maki was on a hunting trip when the shooting occurred.

Underwood was arrested for a minor in consumption of alcohol, but sheriff's officials said there did not seem to be a large amount of beer at the scene.

The case will be sent to a grand jury, who will decide if any additional charges will be pursued.

Many Denton Guyer students wore blue on Tuesday at school to honor Maki's memory.

Funeral services for Maki are set for Thursday at Cross Timbers Church on Highway 377 in Argyle at 11 a.m.

Instead of flowers, the Guyer Booster Club has set up the Nathan Maki Benefit Fund at Northstar Bank of Texas to accept donations.
