A man is in custody after an 8-year-old boy was shot in the face outside a Lake Highlands apartment complex.
The shooting happened Tuesday night at the Fox Hollow Apartments on Royal Lane near Abrams Road.
One witness who lives at the complex said he was outside smoking a cigarette when he heard what he thought were fireworks. Then he saw the boy walking by, bleeding profusely from the jaw.
Neighbors said the suspect, identified by police as 46-year-old Brian Cloninger, tried to drive away after the shooting, but his truck would not start. Then once he was arrested he began acting erratically and started banging his head against the back of the squad car.
The neighbors said they don't know Cloninger and they don't believe he lives in the complex, but they saw him giving away fireworks to children on Monday.
Cloninger was charged with injury to a child. He is currently at the Lew Sterrett Justice Center on a $2.2 million bond.
The injured boy is listed in critical but stable condition at Children's Medical Center.
His family said he now has a metal plate and wire mesh in his lower jaw.
