A critical piece of World War II's Arsenal of Democracy will be demolished under a new plan announced today in Washtenaw County.

The Revitalizing Auto Communities Environmental Response Trust says the former Willow Run powertrain plant will be turned into a high-tech vehicle research facility. The trust has been in control of the property in Ypsilanti Township since GM's bankruptcy in 2009. Under the plan industrial buildings on the property would be demolished to make way for a facility that would be used by automakers, suppliers and technology companies.

Preservationists have been fighting to save the Willow Run Bomber plant where the famed Rosie the Riveter helped turn out planes for the U.S. military in the 1940's.

The plan announced today reportedly won't stand in the way of the Yankee Air Museum's campaign to save a portion of the plant.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
