Student hoax sets off lockdown at Lindley Middle

Posted: Updated:

A student called in a phony weapons threat to Lindley Middle School in Mableton Friday morning, according to Cobb County Schools.

Spokesperson Doug Goodwin said, "Reports of an intruder on the campus of Lindley Middle School in Mableton are false. Lindley was placed under lockdown shortly after 10 a.m. while CCSD and Cobb police investigated. Police and Lindley administration indicated the report was falsely made by a student. Lindley is now operating on its regular schedule."

The middle school, located at 50 Veterans Memorial Highway, went on lockdown about 10 a.m.  Students were reported to be safe.

Cobb County Officer Mike Bowman said, "Police were dispatched to the location of Lindley Middle in reference to a suspicious person who was armed. Cobb County police activated all available officers."

Cobb County police worked with school resource officers to check the school room-by-room for a possible person armed with a weapon. About 11:30 a.m., Cobb police told parents gathered outside of the school that they had searched the premises and that no weapon or armed person had been found. They said no one was injured.

Anxious parents lined up to take their students home, other students remained until the normal end of the school day.

Police said that they had detained a student for questioning.
